Vaughan, Ontario: The City Above Toronto

Vaughan is a southern Ontario city with a population of about 238,000 located the York Region of the Greater Toronto Area. The rough wilderness that would become Vaughan was settled by Pennsylvania Germans in the early 1800s and the city itself was named for British commissioner Benjamin Vaughan, who was responsible for the 1783 peace treaty with the United States. Its location north of Toronto gives Vaughan, ON its official slogan "the City Above Toronto."

The city of Vaughan, Ontario is not so much a city in the proper sense of the word (i.e. has an urbanized downtown area and surrounding suburbs) as it is a collection of smaller communities united only by government oversight. Residents' addresses are even listed under constituent community rather than under "city of Vaughan." Vaughan, ON is home to a large number of small businesses, several corporate headquarters, and a thriving tourism industry. It is also the location of some of the GTA's most popular entertainment destinations, including the Canada's Wonderland theme park, Vaughan Mills shopping center, and the McMichael Canadaian Art Collection.
