Vaughan, Ontario: The City Above Toronto
Vaughan is a southern Ontario city with a population of about 238,000 located the York Region of the Greater Toronto Area. The rough wilderness that would become Vaughan was settled by Pennsylvania Germans in the early 1800s and the city itself was named for British commissioner Benjamin Vaughan, who was responsible for the 1783 peace treaty with the United States. The city of Vaughan, Ontario is not so much a city in the proper sense of the word (i.e. has an urbanized downtown area and surrounding suburbs) as it is a collection of smaller communities united only by government oversight. Finally, there's the small village of Kleinburg. It features dense forests and some of the only remaining agricultural land in Vaughan. Housing developments date as far back as the 1950s. Some of these older homes, the homes on the border of the wilderness, and the large new homes are valued at over one million dollars. Kleinburg attracts primarily affluent people, so of all Vaughan's communities it has the smallest immigrant population.
